Please join us for a three-day, pre-meeting field trip to explore the Motagua fault system, including trenches and tectonic geomorphology.
Day 1 - Start from Antigua at 7:30 a.m. See El Tambor offset terraces and a paleoseismologic trench at Estanzuela.
Day 2 - Archaeoseismology of the Mayan site of Quiriguá, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and trench site near Gualán.
Day 3 - View a paleoseismic trench at La Laguna and visit a limestone mine on the Motagua fault. Arrival at Antigua Guatemala around 18:00.
The 2026 PATA workshop includes an intra-meeting walking tour of earthquake damage, repair, and resilient design to colonial-era churches in Antigua.
An optional post-meeting field trip will take place on Friday, Feb. 6, 2026 to visit outcrops of faults of the Guatemala City graben exposed in Xenacoj at the Cementos Progresso quarry and plant. Buses will leave Antigua at 7:30 a.m. and return in the afternoon.

The pre-conference field trip will leave Antigua at 7:30 a.m. on January 30 from the Convento de Capuchinas conference venue. Participants should plan to store their large luggage at their hotel in Antigua, or bring luggage for storage at the conference venue. Accommodations during the nights from January 30 to February 1 will be at the Longarone Hotel in Rio Hondo. Participants are responsible for their hotel arrangements in Antigua before January 30 and from February 1-5 for the PATA 2026 conference.
The post-conference field trip will start at 7:30 a.m. on February 6 from Convento de Capuchinas conference venue in Antigua and return in the late afternoon to Antigua.
